A flag shape is rotated a quarter turn clockwise about its bottom-left corner. Which of the descriptions matches the result?
Text description of the figure
A flag shape drawn as an upright pole with a small triangle attached to the top right of the pole, standing on a marked corner point at the bottom of the pole.
Hints
Take them one at a time. The first gives nothing away.
1A nudge
Turn the page, do not imagine it.
2The strategy
A quarter turn clockwise sends up to the right. Track the pole first, then ask which side of the pole the triangle ends up on - it travels with the pole, it does not stay put.
3The full solution
Up becomes right, so the pole points right. The triangle was on the right of an upward pole, and turning clockwise carries it to below a rightward pole.
Solution— no shortcut on this one
Track one part at a time. A quarter turn clockwise sends the direction up to the direction right, so the upright pole ends up pointing right. The triangle sat on the right-hand side of the upward pole; clockwise, right becomes down, so the triangle ends up below the rightward pole. The transferable idea: rotate each feature by the same rule rather than picturing the whole shape at once.
Why this is on the test: Rotation questions are answered wrongly when a student turns the main feature but leaves the details where they were.
