1.Four road signs are shown. Exactly one of them has two lines of symmetry. Which one is it?[3]
Text description of the figure
Four outlined shapes side by side, labelled A to D: a plain rectangle, an isosceles triangle, a five-pointed star, and an arrow pointing right.
Athe rectangle
Bthe isosceles triangle
Cthe star
Dthe arrow
Enone of them
2.A pattern of tiles repeats: black, black, white. What colour is the 100th tile?[3]
Ablack
Bwhite
Cit depends where you start counting
Dgrey, because the pattern breaks
Ethere is no 100th tile
3.Ana has three times as many stickers as Bo. Together they have 48. How many does Bo have?[3]
Text description of the figure
A bar model. Bo's bar is one box. Ana's bar is three boxes of the same size, drawn beneath it. A bracket spanning all four boxes is labelled 48.

4.The chart shows how many books four children read. How many did they read altogether?[3]
Text description of the figure
A bar chart with four bars labelled Ana, Bo, Cal and Dee. The vertical axis is marked in steps of 5 from 0 to 25. The bars reach 10, 25, 5 and 15.

6.A solid is built from unit cubes. The two pictures show it from above and from the front. What is the smallest number of cubes it could be made of?[4]
Text description of the figure
Two views side by side. The view from above is a solid 2 by 2 square of four cells. The view from the front is a solid 2 by 2 square, so the solid is two columns wide and reaches two cubes high.

Answer key — Math Kangaroo practice
Each wrong choice carries the thinking that produces it. When a student picks C, this is what they were doing.
1.A — the rectangleKA-0004Line and rotational symmetry
BI found the vertical fold that works and assumed a second one must work as well without testing it.
CI saw that the star looks very symmetric and picked it without counting how many lines of symmetry it actually has.
DI counted the horizontal fold and then counted the vertical one too, even though the two halves do not match.
EI only tested vertical folds on every shape and concluded that no shape had two lines.
2.A — blackKA-0108Repeating cycles and position mod n
BI got a remainder of 1 but read the last colour of the repeat rather than the first.
CI thought the pattern had no fixed first tile, even though tile one is given.
DI assumed a repeating pattern must eventually change.
EI assumed the pattern runs only for as many tiles as one repeat contains.
3.A — 12KA-0110Bar models for part–whole
BI split the 48 into three parts instead of the four the bars actually make.
CI halved the total, as if the two of them had the same number each.
DI found Bo's share correctly but then gave Ana's number instead.
EI gave Ana's total, which is three of the four boxes, rather than Bo's one.
4.D — 55KA-0118Reading tables, charts, and graphs
AI read the axis as going up in ones and added the gridline heights instead of the values.
BI gave the tallest bar rather than the total of all four.
CI added only three of the four bars, missing the shortest one.
EI read the shortest bar as 10 rather than 5, because the axis steps in fives.
5.D — 30KA-0007Working backwards
AI added the 6 and the 9 and stopped, forgetting to undo the halving at the start.
BI undid the steps in the order they were written instead of reversing the order as well as the operations.
CI doubled the 9 first and then added the 6, which reverses the steps in the wrong order.
EI doubled twice because giving half away felt like it should be undone more than once.
6.C — 6KA-0081Views of a solid: top, front, side
AI used the view from above only, giving one cube per square, and ignored the height the front view demands.
BI made just one column two cubes tall, forgetting that the front view is two cubes high across its whole width.
DI added an extra cube that neither view requires.
EI assumed the solid is a filled 2 by 2 by 2 block, which is the largest that fits rather than the smallest.
7.B — Box X is not redKA-0099Reading a logical statement precisely
AI read the rule backwards, as if being heavy were what makes a box red.
CI assumed not red must mean one particular other colour, when the rule says nothing about which.
DI contradicted the rule I was given rather than applying it to box X.
EI decided one fact could not settle anything, without testing what would follow if X were red.
8.B — 7KA-0131Back-solve from the answer choices
AI tested the first choice, got 13, and picked it anyway because it was close.
CI added the 3 to 17 instead of subtracting it, then halved the 20 that gave me.
DI subtracted 3 from 17 and gave that without halving it.
EI added 3 to 17 instead of undoing the addition by subtracting it.
9.C — 750KA-0137Multi-step arithmetic word problems
AI poured out half instead of a third and then forgot to add the 150 ml back.
BI poured out the third correctly but never added the 150 ml.
DI assumed the 150 ml added back was the same as the amount poured out, so nothing changed.
EI added the 150 ml to the full jug without pouring anything out first.
10.C — 4KA-0140The multiplication principle
AI counted the codes that do start with A rather than the ones that do not.
BI counted the letters available for the first position instead of counting whole codes.
DI counted every arrangement of the three letters and forgot the restriction.
EI allowed letters to repeat, which the words each exactly once rule out.
